The play Vano and Nico by Robert Sturua is based on the stories by the famous Georgian writer, Erlom Akhvlediani. Written in 1950, the book became iconic in modern Georgia. An Austrian writer and playwright, Peter Handke, called it “exciting and at the same time paradoxical”. Co-author of the screenplay for the movie Several Interviews on Personal Issues, in 1980 Akhvlediani was awarded the USSR State Prize for excellence in the arts.

In 1999, Hungarian director, Peter Mesarosh, released a film, Stupid Orange Tree, based on Vano and Nico. This is a collection of strange parables about Good Vano and Evil Nico, who decide to changeplaces. For Robert Sturua it allowed an opportunity to create a poetic philosophical production of paradoxical and unpredictable thread of life.
